ADIDAS – ADICLUB “RUN TO THE MOON” - A High-Energy Mid-Autumn Gamification Activation

A physical gamification activation using Wii Balance Board technology, transforming in-store photobooth into a real-time running challenge.

Mid-Autumn Festival – the season of reunion – is not only about admiring the moon, but also about bringing communities together in meaningful and inspiring ways. To celebrate the official return of adiClub Member Week, Adidas aimed to create an activation that went beyond simple interaction. It had to be physically engaging. It had to connect people in real life, not just online. That’s how “Run To The Moon Minigame” was born.

Scope of Work

  • - Game Development
  • - Creative Strategy Direction
  • - Backend Development

When Members Don’t Just Watch the Moon — They Run to It

Run To The Moon Game Station is a physical interactive minigame integrated with the Wii Balance Board, where every step is captured through real body movement.

Participants step onto the board and begin running in place.
Their physical motion is synchronized in real time with the game system, allowing their character to advance toward the moon.

No more tap – swipe – click experiences.
This is real movement. Real competition. Real achievement.

Moments when customers actively participated and unleashed their energy at the event

The Technology Behind the Experience

Wii Balance Board Physical Minigame Development

A custom-built synchronization mechanism that translates weight shifts and motion data from the Wii Balance Board into accurate in-game steps, ensuring responsiveness and precision.

How it works
  • The player stands on the Wii Balance Board
  • Runs in place for 60 seconds
  • The device detects weight distribution and gravitational shifts in real time
  • Data is processed and converted into valid step counts displayed on screen

This solution:

  • Enhances authentic physical interaction
  • Minimizes cheating compared to traditional step counters
  • Creates a unique, crowd-attracting experience at the activation zone

Frontend Development

A real-time game interface displaying character movement, energy bars, and live step counts with smooth animations.

Backend Development

A robust system to process player data, record results, manage leaderboards, and maintain stability throughout the activation period.

The seamless integration of hardware and digital platforms created a truly distinctive gamification experience for the Mid-Autumn season.

UI UX Implementation – When the Interface Runs with Emotion

The entire minigame interface was designed to blend athletic energy with a modern Mid-Autumn atmosphere, using a high-contrast and dynamic color system inspired by the actual gameplay screens.

🎾 Stadium Green (Primary Color)
A deep green tone dominates the background, evoking the feeling of a sports field and reinforcing adidas’ athletic DNA.
This strong foundation creates focus while allowing interactive elements to stand out clearly.

🏃 Track Orange (Running Lane Accent)
The earthy orange of the running track becomes a key visual highlight during gameplay.
It conveys movement, heat, and speed — perfectly aligned with the “Run To The Moon” challenge spirit.

🌕 Moonlight Yellow
Soft yellow tones are used for the moon and glow elements, creating a gentle visual contrast against the dark green background.
This color subtly reinforces the Mid-Autumn theme while maintaining a modern look.

☁️ Green-to-Light Gradient Background
Smooth gradients from deep green to lighter shades add depth and dimension, simulating an open sky environment rather than a flat interface.

🧡 High-Visibility CTA Buttons
“Join,” “Agree,” “Next,” “Done,” and “Back” buttons use bright orange tones to maximize visibility and encourage immediate action in a busy activation environment.

📊 High-Contrast Score & Leaderboard Panels
Score displays feature dark panels with bold white typography, ensuring readability from a distance and allowing players and bystanders to instantly recognize results.
The interface was not built merely to be seen —
it was designed to stimulate movement and create a true sense of achievement.

Gameplay Flow

Designed for high-traffic Mid-Autumn mall environments, the gameplay flow was optimized to be quick, clear, and engaging:

Step 1. Quick Join

Players step on the Wii Board, then tap “Join” on the booth screen to instantly initiate a session.

Step 2. 3–2–1 Countdown

A dynamic countdown animation appears on the large display, building anticipation and drawing attention from surrounding audiences.

Step 3. 60-Second Running Challenge

Players run at full speed on the Wii Balance Board.
Step counts are displayed in real time, fueling competitive excitement.

Step 4. Results & Leaderboard

At the end of the session:

  • Total step count is displayed
  • The leaderboard updates instantly
  • Reward milestones are determined

The leaderboard plays a critical role in creating crowd momentum and encouraging new participants. Rewards are distributed immediately after results are announced, amplifying on-site excitement.

Step 5. Scan QR Code & Submit Personal Information

A QR code will appear on the screen containing the player’s game results and session data.
To receive their reward, players scan the QR code using their mobile phone and complete the required personal information form, then confirm submission.

In addition, participants still have the opportunity to become the top runner with the highest step count during the campaign period. Winners will be contacted by the organizing team after the event concludes to receive their special prize.

Results & Social Impact

The minigame was deployed over 10 days at major shopping malls in Ho Chi Minh City:

  • Saigon Centre
  • Vincom Đồng Khởi

During the 2025 Mid-Autumn activation, the campaign achieved:

  • 2,100+ recorded plays
  • 260+ rewards distributed

Beyond the numbers, the campaign successfully delivered:

  • Strong on-site participation
  • Increased engagement among adiClub members
  • Longer average interaction time compared to traditional activations
  • Hundreds of check-ins and social media shares

By integrating real physical movement, the activation stood out in busy mall environments, naturally attracting crowds and generating organic FOMO.

On social media, images of participants “running to the moon” became visually compelling, shareable content that embodied the athletic spirit of Adidas.

Conclusion

“Run To The Moon” was more than a Mid-Autumn minigame.

It transformed a traditional reunion festival into a modern physical engagement experience — where members didn’t just watch, but actively participated.
